Nowadays, in the Kinkerbuurt, you will find a lot of gems from the Middle and Far Eastern countries, so the Kathmandu is certainly placed in the right place of town. Public transport is about 5 minutes walking and there is free but limited parking available, but hey who takes the car for dinner in Amsterdam?!
Surprisingly, although the restaurantweek showed only very few tables available, we literally had the whole restaurant, staff and kitchen to ourselves.
Having had a look through previous (critical) reviews on Google, I assume this place was owned or operated by a different person before, or… just had a complete makeover after the pandemic. Kathmandu, please let me know if I’m wrong :-)! Anyways, the restaurant looked very new, freshly renovated and very clean and tidy. No unnecessary deco, decent color taste and authentic modern decorated furniture. Facilities, e.g. bathrooms are very clean!
The staff was super kind and attentive. Always explained the courses, tried their best with English and asked about spice level before preparing the food. We went for medium, which was good!
The food: Please consider that we were almost the only guests which means the kitchen had good time to prepare. I did not see any take out or thuisbezorgd neither. We had 5 courses which were served nicely as shown on the pictures. The lamb and Tandoori chicken were served on a hot plate which is really cool. We had so much food, we didn’t make it fully through the main course, but it was delicious!
We had wine and water and those were both absolutely fine, but also nothing “special” at all. There is a drinks menu though and I am sure they have a lot more options.
in summary, we had a great evening and enjoyed the food. The ambience was cozy, calm and friendly. Thank you!
If this place offered take out, I would probably go more often. 60€ p.P. is not necessarily the cheapest dinner but the food is definitely worth it’s price. Will come back sometime!
Wishing you much success during the restaurantweek, dear Kathmandu restaurant, and hopefully many more nights with more guests than just us :-)
